Return to: Programs and Courses - Computer Science/Computer Information Systems The Associate of Science degree concentration in Computer Information Systems (CIS) focuses on the use of the computer as a tool in business data processing. While there is some overlap with the related field of Computer Science, CIS is generally more business-oriented and less engineering-oriented than Computer Science.
A four-year degree in CIS can lead to career positions such as Business Applications Programmer/Software Engineer, Systems Analyst, CIS Manager, or Information Technology Consultant. For a student who is interested in these areas but has not selected a university, the following general Associate of Science degree plan is recommended for the first two years of study. (Since university degree plans vary, in some cases extra courses may be required after the student selects a university.) For a student who has already selected a university, specific 2+2 plans in CIS are available for most local universities, including Texas A&M University-Kingsville and The University of Texas at San Antonio. These can be obtained from the Center for Academic Transitions or the Computer Science & Computer Information Systems Department Office.
