Social work is the professional activity of helping individuals, groups, and communities enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning. The profession promotes social change, problem solving in human relationships, and the empowerment of people to increase their well-being. The practice of social work requires knowledge of human development and behavior; of social, economic, and cultural institutions; and of the interactions of all these factors. Principles of human rights and social justice are fundamental to this profession. Social workers are employed in such fields as child and family service agencies, drug treatment centers, hospitals and hospices, public health departments, social welfare agencies, probation programs, counseling centers, and child care centers.
